Steps to Setup Ruby on Linux or Unix

So you want to set up and install Ruby Programming Language on your Unix machine. This Article will show you step by step how to setup Ruby on your Unix machine. First of all, make sure you have the root privilege on your computer. Then follow the few steps given below;

  • Download the zipped version of Ruby for Unix from here
  • Now unpack the Archive file of ruby and put it into the newly created directory by following —
$ tar -xvzf ruby-1.6.7.tgz
$ cd ruby-1.6.7
  • Now Compile the Source code by entering into the command line as follows–
$ ./configure
$ make
  • Then you have to install the Ruby Interpreter by following
$ su -l root # become a root user
$ make install
$ exit       # become the original user again
  • The Interpreter will install successfully. But make sure everything works fine. To check this write the below code into the command line
$ruby -v
ruby 1.6.7 (2002-06-04) [i386-netbsd]
