Types of Data Transmission Media

Today’s day the whole world is interconnected with computer networking. That’s why we can virtually connect anywhere in the world in a moment. Virtually connect to anywhere means transferring data between or across two or multiple people at a time. And virtually many other things can happen. Transferring data means sending and receiving data actually. All the things happen throughout a Data Transmission Media.

Let’s talk about Data Transmission Media. Data Transmission can happen using a few media a network can send or receive data using different transfer method. See Figure 1.1, represents the Data Transmission Media in Computer Networking.

In the previous post, we have already talked about data transmission media. But in this post, we will discuss it in details. Before learning basic computer networking in depth we will learn the very basic first, It is very important to implement the networking concept properly. So keep learning.

Data Transmission Media in Computer Networking

Modern networking mainly uses two kinds of transfer method to send and receive data:

  • Wired: Transfer data using the wire connection across the device. In this case two or multiple computers connected via wire directly to operate the data communication. 3 Major types of wire:
    1. Twisted Pair Cable
    2. Optical Fiber Cable
    3. Coaxial Cable
  • Wireless: Transfer data without any cable connection between or across the devices. In this case, computers communicate data without any wire connection. 3 Major types of wireless data transfer system :
    1. Microwaves
    2. Radiowave
    3. Infrared

1. Wired Transmission Media

Wired transmission media basically based on physical linking across the devices for establishing a network connection using cable. There are mainly three kinds of cable basically used in computer networking:

(a) Twisted Pair Cable

This type of cable basically used for transmitting data using 2 or more end to end conductor in insulated separately. It is widely used cable for transferring telephonic or ethernet signals. Twisted Pair cable has two different types:

(i) Shielded Twisted Pair Cable (STPc): This type of cable is widely used for sending broadband data from a switch or router directly to your networking devices or Ethernet-based devices. STP cable also can be used for sending voice over IP channel and telephonic line. It is better than the UTP cable.

(ii) Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable (UTPc): This type of cable also hugely used in telephonic line signal. This type of cable is easy to install than STP and least expensive and easy to maintain. But It can not send or receive data to a long distance. The transfer rate will drop and will make noise when the distance will be long.

(b) Optical Fiber Cable

The concept of reflection of light is used in optical fiber cable to send and receive data with a very high transfer rate. Basically, this cable is used to send a big volume of data to a very long distance. Optical fiber cable is made base on a core medium using glass or plastic to make the reflection of light signals.

The optical fiber can send a big volume of data to a long distance without losing any transfer rate. This cable is very expensive and very difficult to install, maintain.

(c) Coaxial Cable

Coaxial cable has mainly two conductors. One of them is a core conductor that is located at the center of the cable. The main core conductor has insulated using a compact mixed plastic insulator and the secondary conductor has covered around the compact insulator.

This type of cable used to send satellite TV signal and analog signal.

Now we know how data passes one computer to another, one device to another using cable or air. It is all about computer networking. Now to make our concept about networking we have to know how the data passes through the cable or air.
